Difference in CDI, ECU and Throttle Body in Motorcycles

CDI, ECU and Throttle Body in Motorcycles all have similar functions, with slight differences in how they help operate motorcycles. We focus on extracting codes from chips inside those components. Ask your local motorcycle garage if you are after mechanical knowledge of those different components.

What is CDI?

CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) is a unit hidden in your bike that acts as a battery and computerised unite to start your motorcycle with RFID (radio-frequency identification). Each CDI box is programmed to work with a chip hidden in your key. If you have lost your key, then a locksmith can recut the key and will need to program a chip to match the frequency from your CDI box so you can start your bike.

What is the ECU Unit?

ECU (Engine Control Unit) is the core component for the engine management systems for motorcycles. ECU's software processes the system information and manages ignition, fuel injection, fuel supply, air management, and exhaust.

What is the throttle body?

The throttle body is a metal tube containing a pivoting flat valve used to control the amount of air entering your engine. In motorcycles, the throttle body connects to the intake manifold butterfly valve.

Some throttle bodies have an electronic control unit.

What is the antenna used for?

An antenna connects two computerise components in some motorbikes like in some Yamaha or KTM. To find out if your motorcycle has an antenna contact us with your make model and year. We will sometimes ask for your ignition and antenna or the antenna and CDI box if they do not match.
